DOOM is both a hobby and a passion project for me so, although I have motivation to finish --if I'm not being payed, I don't think I'll keep up a two pages every week thing.

I'll start up that schedule again around Christmas break, but until then a new page will be uploaded every once in a while

I'm going to tell you a story about my life and how I became a gamer, completely out of order because I forgot the correct order of when things happened.

When I was little, my family had an original xbox with a few games like halo and blinx and DDR. I spent most of my time playing online flash games though, usually Escape Games on Addicting Games, but I also played a lot of Poptropica with my sisters. Not that I didn't like to play halo or mechassault or any other games on the xbox it's just that when you're a kid all games are fair ground and there were more games online than we had on our xbox.

When I got a little older my parents moved an old Linux computer into my room and blocked off it's internet so I could only run applications on it and not do anything stupid online. Meaning my options involved the applications on the computer or playing xbox games more often. I ended up playing a 2D platformer named SuperTux a lot on the linux, and my attention on the xbox transitioned to a 3D platformer named Blinx the Time Sweeper and Halo 2.

Halo 2's was eventually broken out of spite by one of my older sisters leaving me with SuperTux and a lot of sports games. I'd have played Frogger Beyond or Halo 1 but Frogger had disappeared and Halo 1 was stained with something making the disc unreadable. Add on to that that our xbox was getting progressively more old and broken and it wouldn't always read discs anyway, and my options were clear: I would play a lot of SuperTux and any other stock game already installed on the Linux. Not that I never played on the xbox but I left it alone for a while.

Jump forward in time and I would have just realized that you can buy games for the xbox. I didn't have an allowance so if I wanted something I would have to convince my mom or dad to buy it for me. My dad specifically was easier to convince at the time so I would make a variety of deals with him involving chores like cleaning my room and keeping it clean for a certain amount of time depending on the game. The first game I got was called Scooby-Doo Mystery Mayhem, followed by Scooby-Doo Night of 100 Frights and everything that followed was some kind of licensed game. Although I still have one or two of those games the majority of them along with the original games we had were sold by me at a video game shop called Video Game Era, which dethroned the internet as the only source of cheap xbox games and many afternoons involved convincing my dad to take me over so we could buy some new game, the first of which was Pac-Man World 2 which I still have to this day. And although the Linux was eventually dismantled I was decently entertained by just playing games on our xbox as broken as it was.

Speaking of our broken xbox, when we first got Scooby-Doo Mystery Mayhem that was the first time in a while that I had attempted to play a game on the xbox so my surprise when the disc flat-out wouldn't work was insurmountable, and my dad and I both thought it was something to do with the disc. My dad worked out a deal with the seller to replace the disc with a brand new copy if we could return it but at that point I had managed to lose the disc and we didn't find it until months later when the deal was void. Not that I didn't beat the game, every game we have on the xbox is finished except for blinx the time sweeper which was with us from the start and The Incredibles because that game is hard as concrete, let alone the fact that it rarely actually makes it past the start screen on our xbox.

After we started buying games I had started to spend time looking up reviews of the games we bought to see if other people liked them as much as my little boy mind did, and this lead into me watching an internet personality "Peanut Butter Gamer" followed at some point by Space Hamster and Caddicarus which lead to Jontron and eventually Game Theory which allowed to me learn a lot more about modern games that weren't on the xbox. It was through this new-found interest in modern day video games that I discovered Steam for the first time made an account exclusively because I heard of portal 2 and thought that was just the bee's knees. The effect of portal on my brain before I eventually got it was so strong that any clone of portal I could find became top priority before I eventually resorted to flat-out pirating the game. But now that I had a steam account I could get awesome pc games without breaking the law and that became one of my favorite things period.

I also got Portal 2 on a sale with 5 dollars I had somehow attained, and the adventure to put the money on my older sister's card was a story for another day but trust me it was very surreal.

At some point also I found "Chex Quest" in a space hamster review, in which he says the game was released for free on the internet and so I couldn't resist playing it. I did play the heck out of it before eventually I stopped for whatever reason.

I hard started to pay special attention to the game section of Half Price Books instead of immediately flocking to the dvd section and the first two physical PC games I ever bought were Prince of Persia Sands of Time and Bioshock 2, even though I knew nothing about them aside from them being games people talked fondly of online. I ended up getting Prince of Persia for my xbox too but despite working perfectly the first time it ended up never loading ever again and it was on the trip to return the game that I ended up getting the pc version and Bioshock 2 like I mentioned. Compatibility with Windows 8.1 ended up stopping my Persian adventure but Bioshock 2 worked perfectly and so I began playing it a lot.

Having watched the opening cutscene and having no idea what was happening I was in the strange position of literally being on the same page as the Big Daddy the game revolved around- Literally all I knew was that the little girl was cute and also that evil ladies daughter, and that I wanted to be with her in any way I could. I eventually looked up the plot of the first game so I could get more context which ended up being a bad idea because not only did I spoil some crazy twists but Bioshock 2 ended up explaining all of the important stuff anyway.

I also ordered Halo 2 online for the xbox and when that arrived my excitement was indescribable. Having vague memories of playing it as a kid coupled with the long wait for it to arrive made the package in the mail look like the second coming to me.

The games I got after that were various xbox games that I would consistently return, GTA San Andreas for the PC.. (which worked technically but right near the end of the installation the computer suddenly shut off. And the game was not fully installed but it also it would not uninstall because of an error, so it was stuck in a weird limbo and) we ended up returning it, Bully Scholarship Edition (The disc was not actually in the case) and then I sort of stopped going to get physical games at all.

Jump forward again to christmas time, my older sister (whose card I put the portal 2 money onto) got me Half-Life 2 for christmas and I also bought myself Bioshock Infinite with her card and my money. I tried to play Half-Life 2 but it was hard enough for me to cheat through it which was a disservice to the game and left a sour taste in my mouth when I was done, making me leave it in my library for a while without touching it. I played Bioshock Infinite through to the end though and I'll get back to that game in a little bit.

Christmas Day, I get a 50 dollar gift card for Half-Price Books which makes me go back there again on the following days. I bought some movies like the dark knight and holes, some books for my sisters and I also got Batman Arkham Asylum, which was so good I ended up also getting the sequel Arkham City, and on an unrelated note I got Psychonauts which was really charming but I ended up having no idea what the objective was early into the game and so I stopped playing and haven't touched it since. (I'm still just as excited for anyone for Psychonauts 2 though but lets hope it doesn't turn out like Half-Life 3)

After beating Arkham Asylum I decided to replay Half-Life 2 with the oath to not cheat even once, and I'll get to how that turned out later. I will say that the game was good enough to get me incredibly interested in source engine mods and I quickly got Black Mesa the moment I heard it existed. I'll get back to everything involving Half-Life later.

I discovered Doom (1993 not 2016) and fell in love. I was also one of the only people who played Chex Quest as a kid and found out about doom years later but that's irrelevant. I think it's worth noting that Final Doom was not the final Doom game, Doom 3 was the fourth Doom game, and DOOM is not Doom. The only games with names that aren't lies are Doom 1 and 2 what's the deal with that? Anyway Doom impacted my life in such a way that any Doom mods I could find were all fair game, I would get it if it existed. I tried playing Brutal Doom but for whatever reason it won't work for me and always crashes. Through Doom I got reinvested in Chex Quest as well, before getting reinvested in Doom again, and that's actually where the timeline ends. That is present day.

Now I said I would talk about Bioshock Infinite and Half Life 2 because my opinions on both those games are pretty interesting to me.

Half-Life 2 first: I find myself thinking it's not that good and that it's great at the same time. For every single element. I mean storywise there's nothing spectacular, if the real time npc animation wasn't as impressive than Half Life 2 would basically just be a bland dystopia game with a vaguely evil badguy name Wallace.

When I first started playing HL2 I found myself really confused as to what the plot was and I had assumed that was because it was a sequel, but I didn't look up the plot because I had already looked up the plot for Bioshock 1 and that was an awful idea so I continued playing expecting the game to just explain the plot of the first game. But not only does that not happen but the plot of these two games are so unrelated they may as well be two completely irrelevant games. The actual plot of either of them is sort of poorly explained too, I mean the second game in particular I mean what was Wallace Breen trying to do?
I understand that Alyx and her dad are both good people but as far as I can tell Wallace is trying to sell humanity or something and that's a really boring villain motivation.

The player throughout the game is clearly trying to make it to the citadel tower thing but Gordan himself ends up in these weird scenarios where it's clear that he's stumbling his way across the city, I mean the gameplay feels so aimless! There is almost never a point where I'm thinking "Oh I see why I'm doing this! Clearly this is happening because it is the most effective strategy for getting to the Citadel and reaching Alyx's father" I'm instead thinking "Well there's literally no other place to go anymore I guess over there is where the rest of the game is taking place" it never makes sense to me why Gordan's doing any of this, it feels like I'm accidentally saving the world.

To quickly address Bioshock Infinite, I think it's fun. The gameplay was fun, the story was fun, the game looks fun. There are moments that have real character and through all of it's muddled development there's a real genuine love-letter to the fans here so I think it was worth buying. I still think that Bioshock 2 was better, and that the only reason fans didn't like it was because there was no twist in the game. Critics always say it's because of Rapture being stale but look at Minerva's Den or Burial at Sea, both games with twists and rapture-again and those were both critical successes.

I'd like to say that I like every game I mentioned on this journal entry Half-Life 2, Portal 2, Both Bioshocks, and Doom being my favorite games without nostalgia. And SuperTux, Blinx 1 and 2, Fusion Frenzy, and Chex Quest being my favorite Nostalgic Games. I had to sort of adopt myself into gaming culture because our house was not very gamey. But I still have fond memories of logic-ing out every Escape Game and looking up the answers to Poptropica with my sisters. Playing Portal 2's co-op is still how I connect with my sister in college (the one with the card I put money on who got my HL2) I mean video games and video game culture has been a huge part of my life even when it didn't take huge part in my home. And this muddled timeline of real life and opinions that I wrote out is a testament to that, because I still remembered all of that confusing elaborate garbage about video games and video games alone.

I AM SO LUCKY
Let’s analyze this for a moment here. I don’t think you know how lucky I am in this screenshot.
image

So I started up Adventure, and played the third level. I meander for a bit and can’t seem to find any of the dragons, the bat, any of the keys, OR the chalice right?

And then in the middle of the blue maze, I just find the Chalice just sitting there. So I of course grab the chalice, start to head towards the yellow castle when- OH RIGHT. I don’t have the yellow key.
So I decide to gamble for a bit. If I leave the chalice here and search for the yellow key, then the bat might find it, or a dragon might start to guard it.
But I have the arrow I start to reason with myself. I can just kill the dragon if he starts to guard it while I’m gone. But what if the bat takes it? Then what?
Well,.. Either way, I can’t do anything if I don’t have the yellow key. So I decide to leave the chalice here, and continue onward to find the Yellow Key, then unlock the Castle, Then grab the Chalice, MAAAAAAYBE deviate and get the Easter Egg, and THEN I will put the chalice in the castle and win the game.

So I take off at good speed in the maze and then the lower catacombs. But the only thing I find is the magnet. So I go back up and start to give up right? And I attempt to press the Power Button on my emulation, but I accidentally flick the start button.
Lickitysplit. I reset at the castle and…  OH LOOK. The yellow key is in that gap between the two towers of the yellow castle. NOW WHAT.
I get over my previous joy/anger-at-the-fact-that-I-missed-it-this-whole-time when I remember something: THE MAGNET, IN THE CATACOMBS.
So I go into the catacombs, get lost, get lost again, get lost twice more, find the magnet, get lost finding my way back, get lost again, and hey let’s fast forward through this bit because you don’t want to hear about me getting lost more times than you in Seatle do you?
So I go into the yellow castle and attempt to use the magnet to grab the key. It works .(=D) And I unlock the castle, before heading off again to retrieve the chalice from the blue maze, and win the game.
I drop the gold key and see the arrow in a place I never left it. I take my hands off the controller for a moment before realizing the bat must have mov- THE BAT! The possibility of the bat moving the chalice are actually really high now.
So of course I race off to see if I could get to the chalice before the bat does, and to my disappointment, he did. (=C) The object left behind was the white key. I grab the key and start off frantically searching when I see the bat fly by carrying the green dragon. He of course then locks on the the white key I’m holding, and I start to run off with the bat chasing me.
If you don’t know why I can’t let the bat grab the key, let me explain:
If the bat grabs the key, he will drop the green dragon. If he drops the green dragon, I get eaten. I don’t LIKE getting eaten.

I run past the arrow at the entrance to the blue maze, and the bat catches up to me and grabs the key. Leaving me with the arrow and the dragon. I grab the arrow, kill the dragon, and continue rightwards, still carrying the arrow. After a bit of searching, I end up in the white castle when the yellow dragon bumps me, and I go running for the bridge so I can leave.
At that moment the bat flies by and exchanges the bridge for the RED DRAGON.
I START FREAKING OUT. The red dragon and yellow dragon are both chasing me, and I lost my only way of leaving a somewhat tight section of about 4 hallways.
Long story short, the yellow dragon eats me, and then the bat comes by with the CHALICE and exchanges it for the yellow dragon, with me in it. He flies him around the game, giving me a sick stomach, and the the game glitches when I bump into the red dragon (Who wanted to eat me) And I get pulled out of the yellow dragon and am sitting in the yellow castle, holding the chalice, and right next to the exit.
WOW.
Take a moment to acknowledge just how lucky you have to be to end up EATEN. EATEN AGAIN. AND SPAT BACK OUT WITH EXACTLY WHAT YOU NEEDED
but that’s not all
So I frantically and awkwardly stutter around with the keyboard to try and run from the red dragon. who is chasing me through the catacombs, and the bat jumps me and exchanges the yellow dragon with the magnet in front of me.
So there are dragons above and below me, and I’m forced to take a detour through a hallway to the left of me. After some chasing, I end up out of the catacombs with the dragons on my tail. And I end up at the castle and barely make into the castle to see the seizure inducing strobe effects. to hear to ear-numbing WIN music. And to realize that the red dragon was JUST about to eat me.

Yes. I AM the greatest..
